COUÉR HOUSE

Location Pondicherry

Status Completed, 2019

Area -

A renovation project of an Old Tamil House. A beautiful courtyard house had to be reinterpreted and upgraded for a modern lifestyle. The requirement was to make the living area air-condition friendly, which meant closing the court.

Our design approach was to make the court porous, using recycled teak wood louvres and sliding windows that allow for the modern functionality of air conditioning and the court acting as a lung by allowing hot air to escape creating air movement within the house.

Reclaimed Teakwood
Glass
Kadappa

Chettinad district has a long history of using wood in construction as structural elements and for windows, doors and embellishments. The highways surrounding Pondicherry are filled with antique wooden warehouses. We use this reclaimed teakwood as it is well seasoned and available in abundance.
